SOP is a document that is written by students while applying at various Universities/Colleges across the world. It highlights a student’s academic and professional accomplishments. The aim of creating an SOP is to help the admission’s committee understand why a student chose a certain programme and how the student will be attaining their career goals through it. Through your SOP, the admission’s committee also tries to gauge the reason behind you choosing their university instead of another institute offering the same or similar course.
SOP being the most crucial part of your University application, you should take as much time as you can to develop a strong one.
Follow these tips to increase your chances of getting accepted to the Institute of your choice.
Creating that first impression
It is important to make a good first impression to stand out from the competition. A strong catchy opening might also encourage the admission committee to pay more attention to what is discussed throughout your SOP. It pulls the reader and they are intrigued to know more about you.
Read Instructions carefully
The majority of people submit the same SOP when applying to several universities. Be sure to follow all directions given to you. Pay close attention to what they are looking for and tailor your SOP to the requirements of the college or university.
Avoid deviating from the purpose
The selection committee is interested in knowing why you want to pursue a specific degree and why they should accept you. Before you begin writing, research the program you’re applying to. Look into the program’s goals, requirements, and objectives. This will help you tailor your SOP to the program’s needs and demonstrate your knowledge of the program. Tell the committee where you are and what you hope to accomplish.
Maintain a formal but friendly tone
You must also be mindful of the tone while writing an effective SOP. Speaking too casually or in an overly pleasant manner can have a negative impact on your application. Throughout your SOP, your tone should be official yet casual.
Avoid mentioning more than 2-3 Projects/Work Experiences
You could be quite experienced in the relevant field. But emphasise the most significant 2-3 projects you’ve completed and go into great detail about them. Tell the committee what you’ve learned and the challenges you’ve experienced.
Edit and Re-read your SOP
Once you’ve written your SOP, it’s important to make sure it’s error-free. It is imperative to proof read your statement of purpose to avoid grammatical errors and other common mistakes. Get advice from your teachers, friends and family. Make sure your SOP is not vague and every paragraph has a point to convey. Having an error-free SOP will demonstrate to the admissions committee that you take the application process seriously.
Following these tips can help you create an effective SOP that will help you stand out from the competition. Good luck!
I believe that wisdom and information amplify when shared with others. With more than 14 years of vast experience in tertiary education and having assisted a plethora of students in accomplishing their higher education dreams, I’d like to believe that my knowledge is substantial. To make this knowledge count, I love sharing it with students to apprise them of the intricacies of overseas education and to go with that, my keen interest in writing makes it an even more fulfilling thing to do!
