Format and Scoring
The SAT is divided into three parts: Evidence-Based Reading, Writing and Language, and Math. The test is intended to assess a student’s college preparation and skills in areas such as critical thinking, problem solving, and analysis.
The SAT is assessed on a scale of 200-800, with a maximum potential score of 1600. The optional essay portion is graded from 2 to 8. The SAT takes 3 hours and 50 minutes to complete (including the optional essay part).
The Reading section:
The part has 52 multiple-choice questions based on readings from many genres, including literature, social studies, and natural sciences. The Reading part lasts 65 minutes and is meant to assess a student’s critical reading abilities as well as capacity to make inferences from written content.
The Writing and Language section:
The section contains readings from a variety of areas, including science, history, and social studies. Students must read the passages and respond to multiple-choice questions that assess their grammar and syntactic expertise. The Writing and Language part lasts 35 minutes and consists of 44 questions.
The Math section:
The Maths portion measures a student’s ability to apply mathematical principles to real-world settings in addition to assessing subject-specific knowledge. In contrast, the Writing and Language portion assesses a student’s ability to analyse and revise written texts for clarity, organisation, and style. Students can better prepare for the SAT and enhance their overall score by learning the content and format of each part.
The SAT is often taken by juniors and seniors in high school. Scores vary from 400 to 1600, with 1600 being the highest possible score. Colleges consider SAT scores, along with high school grades, extracurricular activities, and other variables, when making admissions choices.
Your overall score ranges from 400 to 1600. The final score is calculated by adding the points from the two sections: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and Maths. The possible range for these two section scores is 200-800. The Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score is made up of two tests: the Reading exam and the Writing and Language Test, and each exam contributes equally to the section score. The Math component score consists only of the Math Test.
There are few Tips and Tricks to perfect SAT Score:
- Remove three wrong answers: This is the most important trick to be used. Use the “elimination method” to remove three incorrect answers.
- Be careful with No Change Answers: The options given can be tricky and similar sometimes. So check every detail properly.
- Use a particular plan to read the passages: First skim through the passage and then read the questions to be answered. Then start answering questions with the handling of passages in detail.
- Take note of passage introductions: There will always be instructions or a topic will be given at the start of the passage which will help you to answer quickly.
- Concentrate on filling content gaps first: The gaps should be filled first as they are straight answers and the remaining can be referred to the passage to save time.
- Choose the more concise answer if both answers are correct: The shorter sentence is the right answer for Sat even if the other is grammatically correct.
- Study Formulas, Grammar rules: There is no shortcut to rules. Every Maths and English rule should be learnt to get good scores.
- Improve your typing speed and do more online practice. The Sat Exam is now only computer based and time bound. So, one should have good typing speed to perform better.
- Always try to understand your mistakes. After every practice session, learn from all the mistakes and not repeat them.
- Double-check your answers and stay calm. Revising your answers will point out any mistakes and a focused mind brings the best results.
